Simply to create a better quality of life while using sustainable practices.
Phase one of Sol Growers mission is to shift food production systems into a more sustainable community friendly model. Sol Growers shifts food production systems by turning underutilized lawns into gardens. Sol Growers has now donated over 31 species of vegetables, herbs, and fruit trees in over 15 households, and 3 businesses. Our garden options use hydroponics, raised cedar beds, and permaculture fruit forest/ native planting. Excess produce from garden installation and maintenance will be donated or sold to local markets. We hope that you enjoy our story, and it inspires you to start a local garden!
Phase two is a larger scope to simultaneously address three key issues.
1. Re-think how to live, work, and have a connection to nature. Our busy lives require our full attention, but there is a significant well-being that comes from touching nature that we and our children are missing.
2. Poor nutrition is hurting our population tremendously in many ways. The issues are direct, but are masked by complexity. With rising numbers of heart disease, obesity, and world hunger simultaneously being pandemics, we need to focus on preventative care with nutrient diets.
3. The high cost of living will continue to increase which also increases the number of people in the low-income category. Combined, Sol Growers intends to solve these three issues for families of four that only earn $40K per year. We envision a house that is truly a home that provides a connection with nature that grows nutritious food at an affordable cost. This is not only an affordable housing project, but a re-thinking of what is actually needed, and addressing it with today’s technology. Sol Growers is evaluating a hybrid design that includes the best features of 3D home printing, container and tiny home designs, while keeping the build cost below $60K. With only one unit on a $100K lot, the base mortgage for ownership would be ~$800 / month versus renting a lesser featured apartment for $1500-$2500 / month.
